Challenges we are leading the way in solving

Overall challenge: The bioeconomy
Circular challenge: A closed loop for organic waste
The organic part of municipal waste consists of food waste and other biodegradable waste from households and businesses. Can we close the loop and treat these biological nutrients locally through bio-gasification, composting or other treatment methods? We are seeking sustainable and feasible solutions that can be operational in the long term, even after 2032.
Circular challenge: Bio-based solutions and island ecosystems
Internationally, advanced research is taking place in high-value bio-based products that harness the full potential of biomass resources. This is done, among other things, through value creation from by-products, specialized biorefineries, and other approaches.
Overall challenge: Managing household waste
Circular challenge: Managing secondary resources
Developing solutions for one or more of the 12 waste fractions that Danes sort at home can support the transition to circularity in Bornholm households. One of the challenges is to move from a focus on recycled quantities to high-quality recycling. There are many questions, but we can find answers: How do businesses and households function in a society without energy recovery of waste? How can the further processing of waste be developed, and who can become relevant future partners for islands and comparable local communities? Design, behavior, and technology all need to be involved.
Overall challenge: Repurposing, recycling and repairing
Circular challenge: Social entrepreneurship for a circular economy
Products and materials that are delivered and sorted for reuse and repair can simultaneously create opportunities for the environment, the economy, and the resilience of society. Can social enterprises protect both vulnerable groups and the environment? What sustainability gains can we achieve by rethinking, reducing, repairing, and reusing, both locally and at the system level? How can we create local platforms and leverage power? These and many other aspects are not side benefits, but part of the very core of the circular economy.
