Christmas and New Year waste: How to sort it
Christmas and New Year is the peak season for large amounts of waste and therefore waste sorting. But how do you sort gift wrap, gift ribbons and fireworks correctly in the bins at home and at the recycling centre?
Wrapping paper, ribbons and cards:
Gift wrap should generally be in RESTAFFALD the container at home, or in the RESIDUE AFTER SORTING at the recycling centre. However, some wrapping paper is clearly made from ”real” paper or is labelled with the waste pictogram for PAPER. In these cases, you can throw the wrapping paper in PAPER containers/containers.
When in doubt, throw the wrapping paper in the container for RESTAFFALD/RESIDUE AFTER SORTING.
All types of gift ribbons must be in RESTAFFALD/RESIDUE AFTER SORTING. Gift ribbons tease the machinery when it comes to sorting them for recycling.
Christmas cards and to and from cards are very welcome in PAPER. If it's too difficult to pry the gift tags off the gift ribbon, put both the gift ribbon and the gift tags in RESTAFFALD/RESIDUE AFTER SORTING.
Packaging made of cardboard or plastic must be sorted separately in the respective containers. This also applies both at home and at the recycling centre.
Bonus Tip: Have bags ready to sort the different materials such as wrapping paper, ribbon, cardboard and plastic while you unwrap gifts and tidy up. This makes it much easier to return the different materials correctly to the various containers.
New Year's cheers and chants:
Do you need to get rid of non-fuelled fireworks must be returned to the recycling centre as HAZARDOUS WASTE. Therefore, it can only be delivered to our recycling centres during manned opening hours.
All types of fireworks that are set off must be in RESIDUAL WASTE/RESIDUE AFTER SORTING.
A lot of fireworks waste contains cardboard, such as spent batteries, but the cardboard is too dirty and moist to be recycled. If you throw fireworks in the cardboard container, the dirty and often moist cardboard will contaminate the clean cardboard, so nothing in the container can be recycled. Therefore, all fireworks must be disposed of in RESIDUAL WASTE/RESIDUE AFTER SORTING.
Packaging, such as cardboard and plastic from fireworks, should be sorted into cardboard and plastic as it is still clean and can easily be recycled.
