WASTEMAN

Project WASTEMAN kick-started the waste-free society when, from 2019-2021, we developed and tested prototypes of future solutions for sorting household waste in Gudhjem and Pedersker.

Between 2019 and 2021, BOFA carried out the EU project WASTEMAN to develop, design and test new ways of sorting and handling household waste on Bornholm. The goal was to contribute to BOFA's 2032 vision of a waste-free society, and to concretise it in some prototypes that visualised a future with a more circular economy.

The project worked with a high degree of citizen involvement to anchor the new waste habits and systems in a strong community between citizens and the waste company. The process included testing solutions on a 1:1 scale in so-called "living labs", which were carried out in selected test areas in the towns of Gudhjem and Pedersker in the summer of 2020. This allowed us to see how different approaches worked in practice, which could be used to qualify the future solutions that would apply to the whole of Bornholm.

As part of the preparations, a series of events and workshops were held in autumn 2019/winter 2020, where local citizens participated in the development process together with professionals (designers, architects, engineers, urban planners, researchers, etc.).

The design process has generated new ideas and gathered opinions on what environmental stations in the urban space should look like, what types of waste should be collected or left at the household and how the waste should be transported. You can read a summary of the proposals in the reports at the bottom of the page.

The new solutions were tested in the summer of 2020 in a three-month living laboratory with around 50 selected test house stands in Gudhjem and Pedersker. There was great interest in participating in the trial, and the final report and presentation at the project's final conference can be found on the project website.

You also have the opportunity to take a look at The official EU website for the Wasteman project, implemented in co-operation with regions in Poland and Lithuania:

With support from the EU (Interreg South Baltic + European Regional Development Fund), the Wasteman team has organised the design camps, which aim to include citizens in the change that needs to happen: to establish better waste solutions and to sort 100%. We take the process all the way to the citizens and involve everyone interested in the waste debate. Come and join us if you have something on your mind.
